Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)
  • ¼ cup red wine
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes (1 can)
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Brown ground beef for about 3 minutes.
  • Add chopped onion and bell pepper; cook until onion softens.
  • Stir in garlic, tomato paste, seasoning, sugar, salt, pepper, and red wine; cook for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and bay leaves; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Adjust seasoning before serving; garnish with parsley.

Notes

Feel free to substitute ground turkey or sausage.
Make ahead for better flavor the next day.
Do not skip the simmering step for rich flavors.
